Creating a common framework of practice

UK SPORT INSTITUTE

The UKSI sport psychology team is one of the world’s leading psychological support systems for high performance. We worked with the UKSI sport psychology team to train each member of the team to effectively deliver our Spotlight profiling tool, with the aim of establishing common ways of supporting athletes across different sports. Over the course of the Tokyo 2020 cycle, Spotlight has been used by over 30 members of the sport psychology team to support 1400 athletes, coaches and staff across the UK high performance system, from 34 different sports at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

THE CHALLENGE

The UKSI sport psychology team is one of the world’s leading psychological support systems for high performance. They deliver practical performance psychology solutions to athletes and staff on the Great Britain Olympic and Paralympic programmes. The UKSI sport psychology team were keen to establish common ways of working, with the aim of increasing collaboration and knowledge sharing across sports.

THE SOLUTION

We worked with the UKSI sport psychology team to train each member of the team to effectively deliver our Spotlight profiling tool. Every member of the team completed the Spotlight accreditation, and were supported to incorporate Spotlight into their work with individuals and teams through on-going CPD.

THE IMPACT

Our work with the UKSI has resulted in over 30 members of the sport psychology team being trained in using Spotlight profile. Over the course of the Tokyo 2020 cycle, Spotlight has been used to support:

  • 1400 athletes, coaches and staff across the UK high performance system

  • 245 of the Team GB and Paralympic GB athletes who competed at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games

  • Athletes competing across 34 different sports at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games

The UKSI sport psychology team have reported that using Spotlight helped to develop a common language around individual differences, adaptability, performance mindsets, and provided a framework for strengths-based conversations. This common language allowed for greater sharing of best practices, and increased collaboration between practitioners working in different sports.
